Mathematics Knowledge and the AFQT

A closed list of rules. Because it is finite, it is the fastest AFQT subtest to improve.

Why it carries weight

Mathematics Knowledge is the recall half of the AFQT math pair. Unlike Arithmetic Reasoning, there is very little to reason through - the item asks whether you know the rule and can apply it cleanly. That structure makes MK unusually trainable: the content is a bounded set of formulas, laws and theorems, and a candidate who has memorised them gains points without gaining mathematical depth.

The corresponding risk is that recognition decays fast. Rules learned a month before the test are still available; rules learned in a single cram are available for about a week. Spaced review of a formula sheet is the whole game.

MK also punishes sign and convention errors harder than any other section, because there is no context to catch them. A negative dropped during distribution produces a clean-looking wrong answer.

Skills, in training order

01

Recite the rule set cold

Exponent laws, the inequality flip, the triangle angle sum, Pythagorean triples, area and volume of the standard figures, slope, and the factoring patterns. Aim for instant recall - if you are deriving it, you are spending time you do not have.

02

Substitution with negatives

Evaluate f(x) = x^2 - 3x + 1 at x = -2 and you get 4 + 6 + 1. Two sign events, each with its own distractor. Drill this until the double negative is automatic.

03

Factor on sight

Common factor, then difference of squares, then the trinomial pattern. Recognising (a - b)(a + b) saves a minute and avoids arithmetic slip.

04

Label geometry before solving

Mark the unknown on the figure, then state which relationship connects it to what you know: angle sum, supplementary pair, similarity, or the Pythagorean theorem.

05

Unit and dimension checks

Area is square units, volume is cubic. A triangle is half its bounding rectangle. A hypotenuse is longer than either leg. These checks eliminate answers without computation.

The subtest guide for Mathematics Knowledge covers the item types, topic map and common mistakes: read the MK subtest page.

Score context

  • MK is one of the four subtests in the AFQT and the one most bounded by content, so a plateau usually means a specific rule is missing rather than general weakness.
  • We report correct answers and accuracy only. MK practice accuracy is not a standard score and does not translate into an AFQT number.
  • Because items are short, guessing is cheap in time: leaving MK items blank to "save" minutes is a losing strategy. There is no penalty for a wrong answer.
The routine

What to actually do this week

Free Mathematics Knowledge practice covers algebra through coordinate geometry, with explanations that name the rule each item tests.

Step 1

Start by writing the formula sheet yourself rather than receiving one; the act of writing is the first pass of memorisation.

Step 2

Ten items a day on one rule, for three days, then mix that rule with a previously trained one so discrimination is practised too.

Step 3

Once a week, do a full timed MK block at 75 seconds per item and log any item where you did not recognise the rule within 20 seconds - those are memorisation gaps, not math gaps.

Step 4

Convert your recurring gaps into flashcards and review the deck the day before every practice block.

Step 5

Finish each week by re-solving the items you missed cold, with no timer, to confirm the fix is the rule and not the luck.

If x = 4, what is the value of 3x + 7?

  1. A19
  2. B14
  3. C21
  4. D28
Answer A

Substitute x = 4 into the expression: 3(4) + 7 = 12 + 7 = 19. Multiply before adding.

Why the other choices are wrong
  • B 14 - 14 results from adding 3 + 4 + 7 instead of multiplying 3 by 4.
  • C 21 - 21 is 3 times 7, which ignores the value of x.
  • D 28 - 28 is 4 times 7, which drops the coefficient 3.

Solve for x: x + 9 = 15

  1. A24
  2. B6
  3. C5
  4. D7
Answer B

Subtract 9 from both sides: x = 15 - 9 = 6. Check: 6 + 9 = 15.

Why the other choices are wrong
  • A 24 - 24 adds 9 to 15 instead of subtracting it.
  • C 5 - 5 is off by one from the correct difference.
  • D 7 - 7 is a miscalculation of 15 - 9.
Example 3GeometryMathematics Knowledge · difficulty 1/5

Two angles are complementary. One angle measures 35 degrees. What is the measure of the other angle?

  1. A55 degrees
  2. B145 degrees
  3. C65 degrees
  4. D35 degrees
Answer A

Complementary angles add up to 90 degrees. The other angle is 90 - 35 = 55 degrees.

Why the other choices are wrong
  • B 145 degrees - 145 degrees uses 180 - 35, which applies to supplementary angles, not complementary ones.
  • C 65 degrees - 65 degrees is a subtraction error: 90 - 35 = 55, not 65.
  • D 35 degrees - 35 degrees would make the angles equal, but 35 + 35 = 70, not 90.

The other three

AR

Arithmetic Reasoning

The single most trained AFQT skill: turning a paragraph of ordinary English into a correct calculation.

WK

Word Knowledge

Vocabulary is the slowest AFQT skill to build and the most permanent once built.

PC

Paragraph Comprehension

The most forgiving AFQT subtest to prepare for, because the answers are always on the page.
