Morphemic decoding
Prefix plus root plus suffix. Knowing that in- and un- negate, that -less removes, and that struct means build lets you work out meanings you have never memorised. Roughly half of unfamiliar test words yield to this.
Vocabulary is the slowest AFQT skill to build and the most permanent once built.
Word Knowledge is one of the two verbal AFQT subtests, and it is the section least reducible to strategy: the score largely reflects how many of these words you already know. That makes it the subtest where the study horizon is weeks rather than days, and where starting early is worth more than starting clever.
The second half of the story is precision. WK does not ask whether a word is in the right neighbourhood; it asks which choice is closest in meaning. Distractors are built from same-root relatives, opposites, and words that share a field but not a definition, so a test-taker with a broad but loose vocabulary plateaus while one with a narrower but exact vocabulary keeps scoring.
Because WK is paced at about 30 seconds an item, the section also measures decision discipline. The candidates who do best accept an uncertain answer quickly and bank the time for the rest of the test.

For context items, read the sentence, cover the choices, supply your own word, then match. This is the only reliable defence against the association trap.
Choices often share a direction but differ in strength. Determine whether the target word is mild or extreme before choosing between two plausible answers.
A noun target cannot be answered by an adjective. This alone eliminates a choice on a surprising number of items.
Words you got wrong on a practice set recur in your future items far more often than words you have never met. Reviewing your own misses outperforms generic lists.

Reference, not routine
The subtest guide for Word Knowledge covers the item types, topic map and common mistakes: read the WK subtest page.

Fifteen minutes daily beats two hours weekly; vocabulary depends on repeated contact, and spaced contact is what creates retention.
Learn ten words a week with their roots, not ten definitions. Write the root once and the words that share it underneath.
Read nonfiction daily - science articles, history, technical procedure text - because WK draws on exactly the register that test passages use.
Do short timed WK sets, 16 items in 8 minutes, to train the decision-not-to-reconsider habit.
Keep a running deck of missed words and retire a card only after it has been correct three separate days.
Negligible most nearly means
Negligible means so small or unimportant that it can be ignored. 'Careless' describes negligent behavior, 'invisible' means unable to be seen, and 'delayed' means late; none of these capture the idea of being too minor to matter.
Read the sentence: The manager's instructions were "explicit," leaving no room for confusion. What does "explicit" mean in this sentence?
The clue 'leaving no room for confusion' shows that explicit means stated clearly and directly. Length, secrecy, and optionality are not suggested by the context.
The prefix "re-" in the word "rewrite" means
The prefix re- means again, so rewrite means to write again. 'Not' is un-, 'before' is pre-, and 'wrongly' is mis-.
Every item here was written for ASVAB Pilot. The explanation gives the method, and the notes under it say what each tempting wrong choice is really testing - which is the part that transfers to the next question.
The single most trained AFQT skill: turning a paragraph of ordinary English into a correct calculation.
A closed list of rules. Because it is finite, it is the fastest AFQT subtest to improve.
The most forgiving AFQT subtest to prepare for, because the answers are always on the page.
